TITLE: Discounting Booth Fees: Why Coupons Don't Apply and What to Offer Instead
CATEGORY: sales
CONTENT: **Short answer:** JAS coupons only discount the application fee — there is no coupon mechanism for booth fees. If a show director wants to give artists a break on booth payments, use booth fee tiers or jury exemptions instead.
## Why coupons don't work for booths
The coupon system on the [Event Coupons Form](/events/$eventId/coupons) is wired exclusively to the application fee charged at submission. Booth fees are collected through a separate flow ([Event Booth Payments](/events/$eventId/booth-payments)) governed by the [Booth Payment Specs](/events/$eventId/booth-payment-specs), and that flow does not accept coupon codes.
When a prospect asks for "a promo code for booth payments," reset the expectation early: it isn't a supported feature, and manually editing booth invoices for individual artists is not a workflow we recommend for a whole event.
## Workarounds to offer
1. **Booth fee tiers.** Booth Payment Specs support multiple booth types/prices. If the director wants a discount for a specific group (returning artists, invited guests, emerging artists), configure a lower-priced booth tier and assign qualifying artists to it. This is the cleanest, most defensible approach.
2. **Jury exemptions for invited/comped artists.** Artists placed on the [Jury Exempt](/juries/$juryId/exempt) list bypass the jury and can be routed directly to acceptance. Combined with a comped or reduced booth tier, this covers "VIP" or sponsor scenarios without touching coupons.
3. **Application-fee coupons as a concession.** If the ask is really "give this group a deal," sometimes an application-fee coupon is enough to close the conversation. Confirm with the director whether the goal is truly booth savings or just goodwill.
4. **External rebates.** For one-off situations, some directors handle discounts outside the platform (refund via their own accounting). JAS doesn't manage this, but it's worth naming as an option so the director knows their choices.
## What to tell the prospect
- Coupons = application fee only.
- Booth discounting is handled by **how you price the booth**, not by codes at checkout.
- Any group-based pricing should be modeled as a booth tier before the event opens, because tier assignment happens during acceptance.
